Chiaravalle Montessori School

Evanston, IL // 2012

Chiaravalle Montessori School is a infant through 8th grade learning community rooted in cultivating an individual child's learning journey in a diverse, community-centered context. As Chiaravalle looks to its next 50 years, The Third Teacher+ team and Cannon Design are exploring the ways core Montessori philosophy is expressed in shared spaces. This addition and renovation of the physical, arts, and dining wing provides the opportunity to reinvent Chiaravalle's heart and invitation to the community.

Through our community-centered process, we integrated design conversations into the cultural, pedagogical, and strategic goals of Chiaravalle. The Discovery phase revealed deeply held values and aspirations of the Chiaravalle community. The hands-on Activation phase transformed principles into design drivers. As the design studio finalizes the design in early 2013, The Third Teacher+ team will explore the cultural and behavioral changes uncovered in the process and act as a partner in Chiaravalle's story-driven development process.

How can we create a “heart” that empowers the Chiaravalle community and expresses Montessori principles?
