On the Boards

Originally planning to add a media learning center to the first floor, the Chicago Academy of the Arts has shifted to create a place that celebrates a blend of academics and arts education. The school currently divides academics from arts, locating classrooms on different floors and scheduling classes at different times of day: academics in the morning and arts in the afternoon. What does creative learning look like? What does it require? How can we create a place that showcases it, gives opportunity to reflect on it, and welcomes visitors into it?

Process Components

  • Observation: of current facility layout and use
  • Interviews: with students, faculty and administration
  • Workshop: with students, faculty and administration to explore the definition of creative learning and what programs could take place in the space
